Learn the Secrets of Systematic Innovation

The fundamental premise of this book is that Innovation is a Science not an art form. It can be practiced and honed to a superior skill by anyone or any collaborative group.

I had the pleasure of hearing Sarah Miller Caldicott, the great grandniece of Thomas Edison and co-author of this book, back in October, 2011. She was presenting the concepts found in this book to a group of business leaders. The presentation intrigued me enough to seek out the book and devour it.

The book breaks down the process of systematic innovation into five clearly-defined and actionable competencies with five supporting elements under each competency. This step-by-step outline to innovation is vastly different than many theories of innovation which focus more on the creative process. These other approaches can oftentimes be difficult to operationalize in a corporate environment.

Interspersed with the nuts and bolts of the Innovate Like Edison process are fascinating facts about Thomas Edison and his colleagues. I found the photos and his hand drawings of innovations intriguing. It is particularly impressive to see a simple line sketch drawing of an idea juxtaposed with the version which was used as visual support for Edison's patent application for the incandescent light bulb.

I particularly liked the concept of keeping a notebook to foster and capture creative thinking. Coupled with the suggestion to use drawings and doodles to capture ideas rather than just words, this is definitely a unique approach unlike others I have been exposed to.

The Literacy Blueprint at the back of Part Two is a wonderful summation of the Edison Innovation Process. I also found the self assessment and competency tools to be very actionable.

I recommend this book for all people who are seeking to jump-start the innovation process in their organization. This is not just for R&D.

Mr. Gelb does it again

This book is for those who love to innovate, invent, and imagine whatever it is you desire. If this book does not make you better at what you do, I don't know what can. The way he breaks down everything is so thorough. Greatly detailed book. I recommend this to all entrepreneurs, inventors, and people who just want to become a better creative person. This will remain with me for the rest of my life. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. 5 stars.

Innovation Reference book!

What can I say? This book is the best book on innovation I have ever read. It not only dives deep into the mind and spirit of Edison, but also provides a great look at the human side of this fascinating man. This book brings to light that not only is innovation the big idea, but also the marketing, manufacturing, and big picture thinking necessary for an invention to be successful in the marketplace. The author does a great job of helping one understand the true nature of innovation. It's not a lone genius in a garage, it's often a team of passionate optimistic people driving toward a common goal with a "failure is not an option" attitude. This book brings together all aspects of current and past information related to innovation. It is not only a great read, but an impressive reference guide. WOW! I look forward to reading other books by the authors.

About the Author
Lihong V. Wang, PhD, is Gene K. Beare Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Optical Imaging Laboratory at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Wang is Chair of the International Biomedical Optics Society. His?Monte Carlo model of photon transport in biological tissues has been used worldwide. He has published more than 120 peer-reviewed journal articles and patents.

HSIN-I WU, PhD, is Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M University. He has published more than fifty peer-reviewed journal articles. Dr. Wu was a senior Fulbright scholar and is listed in Outstanding Educators of America. He serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of Biocomplexity and the Editorial Board of BioMedical Engineering OnLine.

The Most Practical Text in the Field

This is probably the most practical text in the field of Biomedical Optics I have ever seen. The first one with practice problems so that a student can test themselves on their knowledge. It is also more coherent and easier to follow than the several texts in this field where each chapter is written by a different author and leaps from topic to topic in a rather fragmentary manner. I'd highly recommend this to professors as a standard textbook for a class.

Practical, pedagogical with some room for improvement

A very pedagogical approach to optical instruments used in biomedical imaging is presented by the author in Biomedical Optics: Principles and Imaging. This text is widely considered to be the most practical text in the field.
I am looking forward to a second edition of the book, which is necessary in this rapidly evolving filed of optics. I would like to see learning outcomes at the beginning of each chapter, a review of the main concepts at the end and possibly a profile of a prominent researcher in each application. For instance: Prof. Wang in photoacoustic tomography, Prof. Yodh in Diffuse Optical Tomography, Prof. Boas in MonteCarlo, Prof. Fujimoto in Optical Coherence Tomography, etc.
A future deluxe edition with color illustrations wouldn't hurt either.

Good start, but needs more polish

Considering what came before, this text is revolutionary. Previously a 'text' on biomedical optics consisted of various papers or transactions bound together in one book. This is a volume that was started with teaching a class in mind and has plenty of good exercises for students. I say 'started' because as a text book it still has a long way to go. The writing style is very dry (a minor qualm) and overly concise - sometimes one wishes the authors expounded on the concepts with more examples or illustrations outside of the mathematics.

Plenty of helpful information

I needed an overview, some basic info., as well as some details, and this book delivered all of that. As the title suggests, it specifically addresses flux-cored welding, which is exaclty what I was looking for. If that's what YOU are looking for too, I'd recommend it highly.

Important book for coastal - and maritime engineers

Safety and reliability engineers responsible for the design of maritime structures can find in Goda's book all necessary background information for the probabilistic description of loads on those structures. No other book currently exists which gives such a complete overview of all methods to describe random sea waves, with particular attention to the extreme waves. This second edition (2000) contains a number of extensions w.r.t. the first edition (1985) and some sections have been rewritten. The reviewer especially enjoyed studying Goda's outline on correlation models between successive wave heights, marginal probability density functions of wave periods, and joint distributions of wave heights and periods of waves with narrow-band spectra.

I realy use this book often at clinicals. It is small and I bring it everyday with me. It has a lot of information in it for its sizs and you can wright on the pages and clean it off with an alcohol wipe. I would recommend this to anyone. I bought mine used and it is awesome condition.

Human Parasitology, Second Edition, provides succinct coverage of the ways that human parasites illustrate myriad aspects of the biology of parasitism. Intended for a one-semester course, this thoroughly revised text includes updated references to primary research, new chapters on parasites that afflict AIDS patients, new illustrations, and coverage of emerging and increasingly important parasites such as Cryptosporidium and Cyclospora. Intended to appeal to a wide variety of students in the health professions, as well as to biology students in related disciplines, this comprehensive yet compact book will be useful as a reference both in and out of class.

About the Author
Burton J. Bogitsh received his undergraduate education in biology at New York University (University Heights) and his graduate education at Baylor University (M.A.) and the University of Virginia (Ph.D.). He is currently Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences at Vanderbilt University. He has authored more than 100 publications in the area of parasitology and has co-authored a textbook in General Zoology. He is an associate editor of the Journal of Morphology, co-editor of Volume 2 of the Microscopical Anatomy of Invertebrates, and has contributed many chapters to numerous edited volumes on parasitology. His research interests are in the ultrastructural localization of enzymes in helminths with a primary focus on the digestive tracts of trematodes.

Dr. Carter received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in biology at Loma Linda University and his Ph.D. degree at the University of California at Los Angeles. He is currently a Professor Biological Sciences at Vanderbilt University. He has authored more than 70 publications with a primary focus on the biochemistry and immunology of parasites. He has contributed chapters in several edited volumes such as The Biology of the Tapeworm, Hymenolepis diminuta, and has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Parasitology. His current research interests are centered on the host-parasite interactions of the causative agent of Chagas’ disease, Trypanosoma cruzi.

This "Human Parasitology" text provides a balanced introductory view, as it concerned the interactive association between various parasites and their hosts. Its concise and reader-friendly format is a big plus: as it ensured that anyone who reads it will understand the message.
This book is clinically relevant. Its carefully selected contents were designed in such a way that will appeal to students of Zoology, Medicine, Veterinary medicine, Microbiology, Medical laboratory science, and Agriculture.
Discussed in details are various intestinal parasites like: Nematodes, Cestodes, and Trematodes. It also took care of many pathogenic protozoa like: Plasmodium and Entamoeba species. And, there are well-written chapters, which thoroughly analyzed both the Laboratory Diagnosis of Parasitic Diseases and the capabilities of various Antiparasitic Agents.

this book helped me get an A in my parasitology class! is a great book and very easy to read. unfortunately, there aren't many pictures that are in color. but, regardless, i would highly recommend this book for anyone taking parasitology!
