An Excellent Reference, but a difficult read.

This book contains the official pronouncements of the Joint International Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church (hereafter the Joint International Commission). It also contains comments on those pronouncements and additional statements by the U.S. Orthodox-Catholic Theological Consultation (hereafter the U.S. Theological Consultation). Additionally, it contains pronouncements of the U.S. Joint Committee of Orthodox and Catholic Bishops and the Metropolitan New York/New Jersey Orthodox-Roman Catholic Dialogue.

The editors have done a magnificent job providing historical background and appropriate introductory context for the various official pronouncements. They write in a clear and succinct style accessible to the lay reader.

Unfortunately the official pronouncements themselves all too often use specialized theological vocabulary and purposely vague phrasing reminiscent of diplomatic prose. The statements of the Joint Commission are the worst. Turgid does not begin to describe the prose style of those pronouncements, and a typical lay reader will find them unreadable. The U.S. Theological Consultation said as much in their response to those documents. The pronouncements also apparently suffered poor translations from French to English. Fortunately the U.S. Theological Consultation had its own French to English translators who caught the errors.

In short, the book serves as an excellent reference for the various official pronouncements, and the introductory material is terrific, but the pronouncements themselves are difficult to read, and the ones of the Joint International Commision in particular are impossible to read.

Clear, Well-Written Text of Basics and Beyond, Aimed at Users, not Statisticians.

“Essential Statistics for the Pharmaceutical Sciences” by Philip Rowe is aimed at statistics users from the undergraduate level to experienced researchers, not at statisticians. In most cases, it does not explain how to do the math yourself. It explains what statistical procedures should be used for different types of data, why, how to enter the data into the statistical software package of your choice, how to interpret the results, pitfalls, limitations, and alternative procedures. The math itself is only explained when the author feels it would be beneficial to understanding the applications of the procedure. Rowe does not recommend any particular statistical package, but basic instructions are provided for using Minitab and SPSS, with more detailed instructions on the book’s companion web site.

Examples are taken from the pharmaceutical sciences, but the topics are applicable to similar disciplines in the biological, biomedical, and chemical sciences. The first six chapters are basic statistical concepts. Chapters 7-13 discuss various types of t-tests, which have broad applications. The remaining chapters address other topics in, generally, increasing order of complexity. These tend to be more specific to the pharmaceutical sciences or biomedical sciences. Explanations are clear, even for those with little background in statistics, though the later chapters take some concentration and re-reading if you’ve never heard of these procedures before. The second edition differs from the first (2007) edition in that the author has added analysis of covariance, logistic regression, measures of agreement, and survival analysis.

The book’s first part, chapters 1-2, introduces different types of data (continuous measurement, categorical, ordinal) and different ways of presenting data visually. The second part, chapters 3-16, discusses methods of analyzing interval-scale data (continuous measurement data), including six chapters about t-tests. This includes basic calculations of mean, median, mode, standard deviation, standard error of the mean, confidence intervals, how to identify non-normal distributions, to concepts of skewness, kurtosis, population, sample, and how to cope with a strong skew. Chapters on t-tests cover the two-sample test, how to determine if results are significant, statistical compared to practical significance, calculating sample size and P value, and identifying Type I and Type II errors. Beyond the chapters on t-tests, Rowe discusses correlation testing, regression analysis, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA).

At this point, the book gets esoteric for readers with no statistical background. The third part, chapters 17-20, addresses nominal-scale data, or data that consists of categorizations rather than measurements, emphasizing that you need a lot of this type of data to be useful. Topics include the goodness of fit chi-square test as an alternative to confidence intervals, the contingency chi-square test, calculation of relative risk, odds ratio, and logistic regression to determine the influences of nominal or interval factors on the outcome. Part 4 addresses ordinal-scale data and is the only part of the book that addresses non-normal distributions of data. All other methods apply to normally distributed data only. A log transform to give the data a normal distribution was discussed in an earlier chapter. Various non-parametric tests are discussed, which transform the data into ranks, that can substitute for parametric tests in cases on non-normal distribution.

The book’s fifth part, chapters 23-25, addresses measures of agreement, survival analysis, multiple testing and its inherent problems, and difficulties with data from questionnaires. A few chapters have appendices, but these are located at the end of the chapter, not at the end of the book. For all statistical procedures that are discussed, the author tells the reader what data you need to employ the test, how to do it, and explains when the test should be used and why we do it this way. Philip Rowe is a good writer with a sharp sense of humor, which he does not eschew in his prose. Rowe includes “pirate boxes” throughout the text that explain how to lie with statistics. He points out that these are possible because scientific journals do not require submissions to record the main aspects of their trials in advance. All chapters include a brief, clear summary at the end.

Well written, conceptually-oriented stats text

An important passage to help you understand this book: "The book is aimed at those who have to use statistics, but have no ambition to become statisticians per se. It avoids getting bogged down in calculation methods and focuses instead on crucial issues that surround data generation and analysis".

The book is geared towards pharmaceutical sciences, primarily through the concrete examples it uses, and partly through the choice of more advanced topics to cover (e.g., Kaplan-Meier survival analysis is presented, a rarity in most basic stats books).

I got this not as a new learner, but as someone who learned some of this quite a while ago and could use an occasional refresher. Mostly, I'm very happy - the text is generally easy to understand and conceptually oriented (rather than focusing on deriving formulas or on the mechanics of calculation), is especially good and pointing out common pitfalls and misconceptions,

My biggest - and really only - gripe is the rather light coverage of multiple regression - only about 9 pages of material! (From the text: "This section is really only meant to give a taste of what it does. If you want to use it yourself, it would probably be a good idea to get some advice from a competent statistician.") Mmmm...Okay. Seems like a pretty important topic to skim over (although, as far as a 9 page introduction goes, it's pretty good and easy to follow).

Still, it's mostly successful and useful and probably the book the author intended, but it would have to go just a little bit further for me to give it five stars.

This book is very well written and organized. It's a bit different from the usual introductory statistics books in that it not only covers the expected basic topics such as measurement scales (nominal, ordinal, interval data types), descriptive statistics (e.g., measures of central tendency and variability), and inferential statistics (e.g., hypothesis testing, t-tests, analysis of variance, chi-square, correlation) very well, but also topics not typically expected of or usually included in an introductory statistics book but have special relevance to pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences, such as analysis of covariance, and survival analysis.

The companion website for the book contains relevant data sets and instructions on how to perform the various statistical methods using statistical software packages such as SPSS and Minitab, but not the increasingly popular open source and cost-free R programming language and statistical tool. The use of SPSS and / or Minitab may pose potential challenges to some readers (especially those considering the use of this book for self-guided study), such as access to and / or lack of familiarity with the tool(s), but they should still be able to follow the conceptual discussions without too much difficulty.

A little clearer, a few more CLASSIC tunes, and this would have knocked it out of the park.

It was clear from reading that Alfred didn't actually write this one. Usually their tab books are borderline at best. This one, on the other hand, is quite good. The other giveaway is the tablature style. This is noted in a system used in Japan. To the average eye, it looks pretty similar, but the sheer technicality of the the format is a dead giveaway. Also clear is that it was clearly worked out on a Classical-style guitar, instead of a more traditional (At least in the states) steel string.
What this means is that some techniques are a bit redundant, some notation is more confusing than need be, and the skill required for some songs is above the difficulty of the song itself. Still, it provides a good start point to tab out version for yourself.
The other nitpick is the lack of songs. I would have left out Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tacks and Twilight Princess. Create a Volume 2 for them, because they are given a single song a piece, and all three feel like after-thoughts. Missing was the shop music from OOT, the overland music from Adventure of Link (And various field pieces) and the biggest ommision, the Ballad of the Wind Fish. Since this was the central piece to Link's Awakening, I was a bit disappointed,
Lastly, I felt a three bar version of all Ocarina Songs from OOT would have taken up no more than a single page two at the most, and solved one of the primary frustrations many guitar players have when selecting Zelda tunes. This is like creating a Super Mario Brothers Tab book, and not including the underground theme.

Pretty good. Not perfect.

I bought this, along with the piano book. This book has a lot of the more recognizable songs from the series, and they are fun to play. Many of them are challenging for me, but I am not an expert musician by any means. It gives me a reason to practice and learn.

Some pros:
Good song list.
Pages are high quality paper.
Most songs sound very accurate.

Some cons:
The binding is very cheap. It started losing pages after a few days of use. Find a place to get it spiral bound.
Not all songs are exactly right.
Key signatures: I bought the piano version also, so my wife and I could play together. For most of the songs, we'll have to transpose.

Overall, I enjoy this book, and would buy it again.

Great Songs for Intermediate or Advanced

I am a guitar teacher, and one of my students was very interested in playing songs from Zelda. I purchased this book for him, and it has many songs that he likes. Unfortunately, the level of playing required is late intermediate, and so he was disappointed at the complexity of the songs. I have helped him by asking him to play only the highest notes--- in other words, the melody line-- while I play the remaining notes. I teach note-reading in addition to tab and chords, and this book is suitable for all three.

Very Mixed Feelings

I have very very mixed feelings about this book.

This is a very well written memoir of a father who promises his son very early on in life that if he ever makes the pro golf tour, he will caddy for him. To this end, he first takes his son to Scotland to play the great courses in the middle of the winter. He then signs on to learn to be a caddy and to caddy for an entire season. The descriptions of the Scottish courses and the people for whom he caddied are excellent. He returned for a second season (I can't tell you why for spoiler reasons). Eventually he does caddy for his son Jack for a winter in Texas when his son is on the rookie tour. For me, the best parts were the descriptions of how caddies should work and behave and the people for whom he caddied.

I have golfed quite a bit, but am not in love with the sport. If you are, you will see the magic in a lot of the course descriptions. The blow-by-blow accounts of several rounds of gold got tedious, but they can be skipped or scanned without losing anything.

Now the negative. I was an athlete. I saw many fathers like this. They were totally consumed in their sons' lives and they wanted their sons' goals to be their goals. It is beyond living vicariously through their sons, it is all about them. This guy actually got creepy. Give up your life to learn to caddy? Follow your son on every hole on the pro tour? Not right. Added to this, he was constantly spouting life wisdom to his 22 year old son. I give the biggest kudos to the son for not decking him and sending him back to Maine from Texas. The saddest thing was he did not even see it. At one point he said he didn't want to be a "helicopter" parent. He was a Black Hawk parent! Even when his son began to talk about applying to management jobs with Sherwin Williams, he was still thinking about persuading him to get on the next tour level up. His dream must live on - the heck what his son wants.

This would have been an excellent book had the author used it as a message of how not to live through your child. Unfortunately, moderation is not in Mr. Snyder's lifestyle (as you might have seen in his previous books). Read it for the golf. Don't read it for how to model your parenting.

Not a good read ruined

I am a reader, not a golfer, so when my husband - who has been known to spend a few hours playing and watching the game, suggested I read "Walking with Jack" - I wasn't sure it would grab my interest. It did, and how! Anyone who has a son, brother, nephew or male friend with a dad will be instantly hooked on this wonderful father/son story. Golf was the back drop - and I did learn a thing or two about the game, but it was the myriad of relationships - between the author and his son, the author and his father, the author and the men and women he caddied for while training to be his son's caddie and the author with the other caddies - that moved the story along and had me wishing the story would go on a little longer. Ladies, do not be put off because it is a "golf" book - you'll love it! Sandy Morgan

The Meaning of Life (and, of course, Golf)

The title (and subtitle) of this book pretty much tells you what this book is about, but there is so much more.

I am not a golfer having never played. I have golfing friends who love the sport and I have learned from an academic standpoint some of the finer complexities of the game. From that I can appreciate many of the descriptions in this book concerning green slopes, grass patterns, bunker shapes and fickle winds.

When I picked up this book I thought that it might test my reserve to obey my rule of never starting a book without finishing it. I need not have worried. This book is about golf, but it also is about life, relationships, familial and friendship love.

The protagonist of this book is the author and, of course his son, Jack, but there are many lesser protagonists in this book in the form of family, fellow caddies where Don is learning his abilities in support of his son as well as the many people who he caddies for on the courses around the St. Andrews Scotland vicinity. The primary antagonist is the Scot weather along the coast of the North Sea. That along with the vicissitudes of poverty and hand-to-mouth existence of the caddies also add to the antagonism.

What golf teaches is humility. That is not a lesson that ever seems to sink in to the rich, tourist golfers who travel to St. Andrews.

There are, however, golfers who actually go to St. Andrews for the joy of golf and camaraderie with friends and family.

This book is more about that than it is about the rules of golf. And there is also Jack.
