About the Author
LAURIE DAVID is devoted to stopping global warming. She founded the Stop Global Warming Virtual March and has produced several projects that aim to bring global warming to public attention, including the TBS Earth to America! comedy special, the HBO documentary Too Hot Not to Handle, and Al Gore's documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. She was voted Glamour's Woman of the Year for 2006. Laurie lives with her husband and their two daughters in Los Angeles, California.

Cambria is a former award-winning advertising copywriter. She has written articles for Boys Life, Parenting, and the Los Angeles Times magazine. Cambria speaks to children all over the country about reducing their carbon footprint. She sits on the Los Angeles Leadership Council of the Natural Resources Defense Council and lives with her husband and three children in Los Angeles.

This is a truely great chalenging and inspiring film. Al Gore and this film deserve all the awards and Nobel Prize they earned.

Incorrect Critical Charts

Readers should be aware that the the first editions of this book contain a chart (page 18 ) of the past 650,000 years that shows that CO2 emissions rose BEFORE global temperatures. In fact, the chart is reversed - CO2 emissions did rise, but only hundreds (in some cases thousands) of years AFTER temperature rises. For some reason the chart lines are backwards.

Scholastic is planning to issue a revised version with an updated chart, but there will be no revision to the text of the book, which references and explains the chart. I don't know that most kids will notice that the chart does not support the argument, but an important subject like this should be accurate in all details.

With such inaccuracies I do not recommend the book. Explain global warming to your children yourself - and be sure and use accurate information!

Hopeful and Empowering for Kids (and adults too!)

This book is fantastic! It discusses a potentially scary subject in an engaging and surprisingly optimistic way, informing kids while also giving them a feeling of hope and empowerment. The ideas in this book are presented in a clear and clever way. The authors even managed to bring a tone of lightheartedness to an undeniably heavy topic.

The importance of preserving our children's future is not political issue...it is a love issue. And whether you drive a Prius or a Hummer, there's no doubt that we all love our children. This book helps us open our eyes and our hearts to the many small (and not so small ways) we can each contribute to a cleaner, safer earth. And it allows our kids to be part of that healing.

There are so many things kids can do to help care for our world, and this book gives them the tools with which to do it. It also invites them into an age appropriate sense of responsibilty and ownership for the animals and nature that they adore. The book imparts practical, doable ways kids can contribute and lets them know that they (and their efforts) count!

Year 2035

Cyn is a Drug Enforcement Agent (DEA) operative on assignment in Mexico, where a weapons deal goes wrong. Another agent was embedded with the cartel, which wasn’t revealed to Cyn for both of their safety. She arrives at the meeting and exits her red Corvette and walks up to the three Hispanic men. Emmanuel walks up and starts to pat Cyn down as she flinches from the man putting his hands on her body. Then he reaches under her skirt and slides his hand up between her legs. She shoves him away as he realizes she is carrying a weapon. “She’s packing,” Emanuel tells the other two men. The other men put their hands on their weapons. “Stop!” A voice emanates from the shadows near their vehicles.

Cyn strained her eyes trying to see who the voice belongs to, but the man stayed in the shadows so he wouldn’t be recognized.

“Where are the weapons?” he asked?

“I didn’t bring them because I don’t trust any of you,” she said. “I have them stashed and waiting at a close-by location.”

“We don’t have time for nonsense,” he said as he pulled out his cell phone and placed a call. After he finished the call, he pulled a black duffle bag from his car and said, “That was my contact and he stated there is no close-by location and this is a setup.”

“Kill the girl!” a voice came from the dark. Cyn quickly grabbed her weapon from her inner thigh holster as someone started firing from the dark. One round hit him in the arm as Emmanuel pulled his weapon and put a round in the center of her chest. As she fell to the ground, she fired one round in the chest of Emmanuel, instantly killing him.

She lies on the cold floor in a pool of blood, gasping for air as she could hear the air suction from the hole in her chest. She could hear the men leaving through a door in the back of the warehouse. Then she could hear some metal banging as she passes out. When she came to she was in the hospital waking up from a 30-day coma.

The Chameleon by Douglas Green
I really enjoyed this book. It had a lot more sex in that I thought it would have. Some parts were right close to porn. I liked the plot and had a nice Syfy twist in the entire story. I also liked Mr. Green’s tale on what new Technology might come about in the next 20 years as well.

Excellent Translation

This book is a collection of essential texts concerning the bridge between Neo-Classicism and, reaching its zenith, Romanticism in German Aesthetic thought. Today, I believe these texts are one of the most important in the history of ideas, because it is the first time thinkers have questioned their ethical place in society, and under what conditions the Good is, in fact, a representation of the Beautiful. This is not only a reaction to Immanuel Kant's two books, Critique of Practical Reason and Judgment, but is also a reformation of the battle to weaken Reason in the face of the rising development of technology.

The first half, Neo-Classicism, are essays by Hamann, Lessing, and Moritz. They are excellent essays that deal with reviving themes put forth by Greek Mythology, Virgil, and Homer. The last half, the romantics, Schiller, Holderlin, Novalis, and Shlegel, rethink Neo-Classicism and puts them under a new aesthetic light, which not only believe in the classical concept of perfection and beauty, but how it relates to ethics, where at its ultimate peak, all man strives to become "a work of art."

The essays may be very technical prima facie, but through reading other texts, such as Frederick Beiser's The Romantic Imperative, you understand the central concerns of the German romantics, and how these concepts are useful today.

In the 1920s, Marston and his wife, Sadie Elizabeth Holloway, brought into their home Olive Byrne, the niece of Margaret Sanger, one of the most influential feminists of the 20th century. The Marston family story is a tale of drama, intrigue, and irony. In the 1930s, Marston and Byrne wrote a regular column for Family Circle celebrating conventional family life, even as they themselves pursued lives of extraordinary nonconformity. Marston, internationally known as an expert on truth - he invented the lie detector test - lived a life of secrets, only to spill them on the pages of Wonder Woman.

The Secret History of Wonder Woman is a tour de force of intellectual and cultural history. Prepare to be surprised, amazed, and alarmed by the people who created and shaped this comic icon.

Here is the internal dialog I had going at one point while reading this book.

Me: "So the inventor of Wonder Woman was a psychology PhD who also invented the first lie detector."

Also me: "Neat."

Me: "Get this, he was also a pretty hardcore first-wave feminist and based a lot of Wonder Woman's stories and characteristics on Margaret Sanger, the birth-control pioneer."

Also me: "That's pretty cool."

Me: "He also lived with three women, had children with two of them, and balanced this unusual lifestyle fairly gracefully in way that his wife, Halloway, could fulfill her ambition to maintain a full-time job, while his mistress, Olive Bynre, could do what she wanted and raise the kids, while the third woman, Hurston, could come and go as she pleased. I should mention that Byrne wore thick silver bracelets, while Hurston and he were really into bondage."

Also me: "That's pretty crazy, I mean especially for the early twentieth century..."

Me: "You're still not getting it: kick-ass first-wave feminist sensibilities, thick silver bracelets, bondage, and making people tell the truth."

Also me: "Oh God, that's Wonder Woman's whole gig, truth-telling lasso and all. Wow."

So if after that little exchange you find yourself intrigued instead of bored, check this book out. It really is more of a biography of William Moulton Marston (WW's creator) than of the character, but it really is pretty interesting and naturally puts Wonder Woman's development into a more complete context. And the detailed research that went into digging this story out of DECADES of deliberate obfuscation is simply amazing. The author, Jill Lepore, deserves a round of applause for finding this amazing story and bringing it to the public in such an engaging way. This book integrates the history of feminism, comic books, psychology, social shifts in both sexuality and gender, and in the process gives us a nuanced look at some truly interesting people.

Martson was a competent but spotlight-loving academic who couldn't resist sabotaging his own successes (in that way he is similar to his predecessor, The wizard from Vienna: Franz Anton Mesmer). Halloway, the wife and rock of the relationship(s) who wanted to give life her best as a working woman but still be able to raise a family. Byrne, the (seduced) graduate student who worked on much of WMM's projects anonymously and raised the Marston family to compensate for her own lonely childhood. And there are many others.

Suffice to say - this is an engaging read for anyone interested in the history of feminism, comics, and (naturally) Wonder Woman herself.

FUN AND FANTASTIC WAY TO LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE WOMEN'S LIBERATION MOVEMENT

wonderful book. I had NO idea it would have so much good history in it.....I have purchased several more copies to give to friends and relatives (INCLUDING MEN!) as presents. You should promote it as an enjoyable, fun way to learn about the history of women's liberation.
I am one of the founders and current board member of The Action Committee for Women in Prison.....and am passing the word on to everyone I can think of.

Wonder Woman, Suffrage and the Family Behind the Comic.

Aside from learning about the complex origins of Wonder Woman, I learned a lot more about the history of woman's suffrage and I have even a deeper admiration for Margaret Sanger who was the inspiration for Wonder Woman. The mini bio on Sanger was quite impressive and after learning of the amazing number of births that her mother had that possible contributed to her early death, you can understand her motivation to free women from a life of continuous child birth and to have rights within their marriage and as an independent individual with options for career. The creator of Wonder Woman, William Marston, was a story in his self between inventing the lie detector test and an inability to maintain sustained employment in spite of many excellent academic assignments. In addition, his unique ability to embrace the woman's suffrage movement while living with two women, his wife Elizabeth and Olive Byrne, and raising 4 children with both is quite fascinating. Both women were able to sustain careers, particularly after Olive was able to ease up on her primary child rearing. The progression of the comic is frustrating as Lepore explains the challenges of censors, vindictive psychiatrists and after Marston's early death, the assignment of a writer who has virtual no admiration for the original persona of Wonder Woman. Lepore provides so much about the unusual lives of the Marston family, advanced in some ways, two women involved with child rearing allowing one to have a career while explaining the motivations and symbolism of the comic. A book that was both fascinating and educating on the woman's movement complete with an update on Wonder Woman's place in the feminist movement of the 60s and 70s.

If you have a set, budget, live accompaniment, and decide to memorize it all, you can still perform this pageant. Cast members (and production staff) should be dressed to approximate shepherds, Mary and Joseph, wise men, and angels with costumes and props. Only two full cast rehearsals are needed. The cast is arranged so that only one speaker appears in more than one act. The group can rehearse all three acts (not including the music) during the first rehearsal! This allows each child to spend time practicing, rather than waiting for a turn to say their lines. The second rehearsal is just a matter of going straight through the script with actors and musicians. This pageant can be staged with as few or as many sets, costumes, and props as you desire. It works equally well with no costumes or sets (read with scripts in hand), as it does with a full production of costumes, scenery, and every word memorized. Vocal/piano scores for the sung music selections of the pageant are included. The arrangements of the Christmas carols used during and between the acts afford you the option of having a choir, a soloist, or instrumentalists, or others to participate in the pageant.

Length: 35-45 minutes.
Cast: Up to 20 or more speaking parts, plus additional opportunities for non-speaking parts.

Congregation enjoyed it.

The children at our church performed this pageant last week, and the congregation really enjoyed it. It is a humorous play in 3 acts: 1) Mary is told by the angel about the birth of Jesus, and she and Joseph are told in Bethlehem by the hotel clerk that their reservation at the inn has been cancelled; 2) some shepherds on the hillside are told of the birth of Jesus by some angels, and 3) the wise men visit Herod's palace on their way to visit the holy family. The script is written such that a child only has to attend the rehearsals for the 1 act in which their character appears. We did this on 2 three-hour rehearsals: one for staging, and one dress rehearsal with all the extra angels, lambies, etc. The kids mostly learned their lines at home before rehearsals started. The script includes a CD containing many things, most of which I didn't need, but it did have a recording of a "junk band" (which is required in Act 2), and a recording of a trumpet giving a herald call, used when the angel appears, and also when Herod is announced in his palace.

The script, as I said, is humorous. For example, Mary, when visited by the angel, thinks she is a solicitor and asks her to put them on her "do not call list". Our congregation laughed at all the right places and seemed to enjoy the humor. There are many practical suggestions in the text accompanying the script.

Best Christmas Pageant Ever!

We did this at the first church I served & it went over so very well that I had to get it for my next church. Adding a bit of humor to the traditional story is just what the people need sometimes. We even added pogo sticks to the kings the first time around. Maybe this time it will be a skateboard - you never know how the Holy Spirit will move you to be creative when using this pageant! If you're wondering which pageant you should buy - look no further. This one will not disappoint!

good but not perfect

I choose this pageant for our church because I liked the promise of brief rehersals. The format worked well, the children practiced in individual acts two times, one all act run through and one dress rehersal. NO PROBLEM with that limited amount of time MAINLY because we had tryouts for parts two weeks in advance and then required the children to come to the first practice with lines memorized. Some used printed scrips as props (as suggested in book) but 90% were able to memorize no problem. TWO drawbacks... hence the three stars and not higher. While the dialogue in the three acts was engaging and clever, the lengthy "narrator" portions were deadly dull. We completely scrapped them for our own work. ALso, the music was much more complicated than we could manage so we just cut most of it out. Overall, I would recommend this series... and HIGLY recommend you NOT overpractice, otherwise it defeats the purpose of the format!

This book is my companion for life

You will never find a better book on linear algebra and calculus! The beauty of this book is that it makes no distinction between the topics and has very clear explanations. Problems and the end of chapters make you prove results that will blow your mind (stuff from physics, other branches of mathematics, etc.). I keep coming back to it whenever I forget things. This book replaces a library!
