A primer where few primers exist

As other posts have said, this book's main strength is that it gathers together methods from a variety of technical articles and puts them in one nice place. From that standpoint, it is a nice entry point into the field of performance attribution & to survey the landscape, as it were. It is clear & concise. But it doesn't have sophisticated or advanced treatment of any one subject.

I recently finished reading Investment Performance Attribution, and thoroughly enjoyed it. While all of this information is available elsewhere, it's nice to see it in one place, and the comparison of formulas is invaluable. I will definitely keep this book close at hand for ready reference.

Good basic book- easy to read, full of info

As a professional who's job is performance and attribution- this book was a good basic education. Doesn't include a whole lot about fixed income (just one chapter)- where attribution is on the "bleading" edge. Recommended.

Very good book - did not find it to be "AP all the way or nothing"

I'm a working mother of a 2-month-old baby girl, our first child, preparing to return to work. I hesitated in buying this book because (1) I was dubious about Attachment Parenting (AP) and its merits and (2) there were so many negative reviews stating that the book is a major guilt trip for anyone who can't or won't follow the Sears's suggestions to the letter.

I absolutely did not find this book to be an attachment parenting manifesto. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised that many of the tenants of the AP movement are in line with my (desired) parenting style rather than some sort of granola/coffee shop socialist/impossible to execute approach to life with a child. The Sears give suggestions for all different scenarios, AP or not. For example, while they do state many times that breast feeding is best, they also give plenty of information about a safe and loving way to bottle feed if you can't or won't breastfeed. Other reviewers said that the book makes them feel that if they're not breastfeeding, sharing the bed, quitting their jobs, and wearing their baby everywhere (including to the bathroom), that they are horrible parents. I did not feel that way at all. The Sears provide different ways of handling feeding, sleeping, and so on, and encourage you to make your own choice. I have done some things that they have suggested, and some not. I breastfeed and waited 2 months before bottle feeding expressed milk. I've tried baby wearing, but I have one of those rare babies who doesn't like to be held a lot who screams her head off when I put her in a sling. So she spends a lot of time in her bouncy seat wherever I am, instead of on me. I did not quit my job, and she will be going into daycare soon. She does not sleep in our bed, as I am terrified of smothering her, and because I need some sleep myself. So she sleeps in a bassinet next to our bed and we're able to attend to her immediately. The Sears were pretty clear about being anti-pacifier and because of that we instructed the hospital not to give her one under any circumstance. After spending several consecutive hours with our fingers/thumbs in her mouth (and I couldn't put her to the breast for hours because of cracked and bleeding nipples), our resolve crumbled and we gave her a pacifier...then ran to the store to buy several more. But I didn't feel the need to throw away the book once we "went against" it.

I took the advice of another reviewer and combined this book with Penelope Leach's Your Baby and Child and have found both to be valuable resources.

The Sears' overall message (as well as Penelope Leach's) is that you need to be open-minded as a parent, and do what works best for your baby, for you, and your lifestyle. It will be next to impossible to find something that parrots back to you everything you think you should be doing--or want to be doing. Parenting is hard, and it is a learning experience. This book is a good guide (not instruction manual) through that process.

I love this book!!!

I used this book with my first child, then bought the ebook (not a Kindle, so I won't say!), then gave my hard copy to a friend. I then found another copy at the library bargain book sale and bought it for a friend who is pregnant. It's sooooo thorough. I love the Sears' philosophy. Parents should be loving, and do what works for them! But to get an idea of what people go through for their kids -- it's NOT ALWAYS EASY, but you don't become a parent to have an easy life, and you now have a little human who needs you. I think they give a really accurate picture of some of the time and energy it takes, but it will pay off when your child is independent, respectful, and loving. Don't short change your child later by taking shortcuts when they're babies. Yes, you will be sleep-deprived, scared of rolling over on your baby, and maybe people will look at you weird for sleeping with your baby or for nursing your toddler. But do what works for you, and, as they say in the book, say "My doctor says to do it" because Doctor Sears said so! I have no regrets -- nursed my oldest till he was two, shared our bed with him, and now we are doing the same with our second baby. Our oldest is just five and doing so well, so independent and caring!

Good for reference, take the attachment advice with salt...

I ordered this book toward the end of my pregnancy, after a friend recommended it to me...I had been more focused on planning for the birth and realized I had only one parenting book, so I didn't have time to do more research into what kind of book might be best suited for me. I had vaguely heard of attachment parenting in my childbirth class, but didn't necessarily plan on practicing any of it except for breastfeeding (to which I was 110 percent committed), and possibly baby-wearing (sounded interesting, the reported benefits made sense). I liked that it was over 700 pages, and was sure it would be comprehensive and full of great advice. I had no time to read it before my birth, it actually arrived a few days after my daughter was born.

It freaked me out in the early days so much that after a few weeks, I hated it and couldn't read it anymore. I agree with the review titled "the guilt trip book," it's totally how the book made me feel at that time! Over the course of the early months, I also read "What to Expect the First Year," given to me by a relative. I liked getting the Sears' perspective, then contrasting it with what was in "What to Expect," which delivered some of the same information, without advocating attachment parenting. I disagreed with some of the suggestions and approaches in that book too, which went too far in the opposite direction...so after the newborn stage was over, I could read the Baby Book with a new purpose, not of finding answers, but just of educating myself in the general sense, taking what I liked from it, and ignoring what I didn't like.

I agree that Dr. Sears DOES advocate getting to know your baby and doing whatever works best for *your* family, however, I think that message can get lost in the sometimes repetitive promotion of attachment parenting techniques. For example, baby wearing--I wanted to do it, but my daughter ended up being a very active baby, and was actually happier just playing by herself on the floor. She squirmed and cried to get out when I put her in the Moby wrap. Co-sleeping--my daughter slept just fine naturally on her own in her crib from about six weeks on, without my husband and I doing any kind of sleep training or "cry it out" (just lucky, I guess!) and my husband and I slept fine in our bed, using the baby monitor.

For me, the Baby Book is good to have around the house for reference, but I don't necessarily use it for advice.

Boring literature

I expected a lot of this book because I've read better works from Redfern, but this one is a collection of different and not updated pieces of information, that really bring nothing essentially new. There are not secrets exposed beyond getting to know some secret places used for processing data by the British intelligence.

Christian Crispoldi is a Vice President at Nomura Holding America Inc., in New York where he is responsible for the valuation and pricing of interest rate derivatives. Previously he worked as a financial engineer in various banks across Europe. Christian holds a Masters degree in Mathematical Finance from the University of York, UK, and a bachelor degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Bologna, Italy.

Gérald Wigger is Head of Quantitative Analysis at Weisshorn Re. He previously worked in various roles such as Head of Pricing at Axa Winterthur, Head of Risk Modeling at Zürcher Kantonalbank and Interest Rate Derivatives Quant at Bank of America Merril Lynch. Gérald holds a PhD in Solid State Physics from ETH Zurich.

Peter Larkin is a Data Scientist working on building predictive models using big data in the (re) insurance industry. Previously he worked as a Quantitative Analyst in the financial services industry working on projects spanning the pricing of structured products, credit and market risk, and asset management. Peter has a background in Theoretical Physics and received his PhD from the University of York in 2008, previously having obtained his Masters at Cambridge University and BSc at Imperial College London. Very nicely written

Expensive for what it offers, superfluous code

I found this book's utility limited to the *only* useful piece of actual code - the simulation of Sabr LMM. If you really want to learn Sabr LMM, I strongly recommend The SABR/LIBOR Market Model: Pricing, Calibration and Hedging for Complex Interest-Rate Derivatives.

A lot of python code seems superfluous. For somebody trying to learn Sabr LMM, do we really need code to -
1. calculate first derivative (essentially (a-b)/h)
2. calculate second derivative (essentially (a-2*b+c)/(h*h))
3. draw 2 correlated random numbers (essentially X and rho*X + sqrt(1-rho*rho)*Y). Then there is a separate snippet to calculate more than 2 correlated random numbers (run of the mill cholesky decomposition, can effectively be done in two lines)!
4. calculate (a+b*t)*exp(-c*t)+d (yes, this one liner is a separate python function in the book and mentioned as such in the book and all the marketing material).
and so on, I hope you get the idea.

The authors will say this code is used elsewhere in the book but then effectively the count of *examples implemented in python* (included in the book title as well) is down to two or three. Plus you will have to manually type the code from book, but hey at least no body can steal their code without paying for it! Another way to put it would be - no body can use their code even after paying for it!

This being said, the book does have bits of useful information here and there. I suggest a buy recommendation if price goes down to 25 GBP/ 40 USD , its way too expensive otherwise. You are better off spending your money on Rebonato's book.

America enters WWII on the Russian Front...on the side of the Russians

Slade returns to his alternative WWII history with the entry of an untried America on the side of the Russians against Nazi Germany. Well written, Kazan Thunderbolts follows the new troops into battle, learning their trade from Russian allies who have fought the Germans for years. Slade carries threads following ground, fighter, bomber and naval, riverine combat between US forces and the more experienced Germans. This volume of Slade's alternative history doesn't deal much with his near-immortal behind the scenes protagonists but focuses on well written, knowledgeable descriptions of an American campaign in Russia. He pays attention to logistics and the role the deception and intelligence plays and develops his characters well.

Slade Consistently Entertains

I have read most of Slade's canon, and I find him consistently entertaining and thought provoking. This book was particularly well done. His premise has Americans (many very well known) fighting alongside Soviets who have dispensed with Stalin against the Nazis. The premise is well thought out, and I am eagerly anticipating a follow up. On the downside, Slade has never quite gotten past weak editing. Grammatical and syntactical errors occasionally distract, but do nothing to diminish his deft mastery of military detail and narrative structure.
