THE best book for learning physics
By ScienceThinker
During the period of the cold war between USSR and USA and while the race for space was on, a revision of the science program in USA occurred. Out of this revision many beautiful books to educate the young generations of scientists were written. In particular, in physics several monumental introductory textbooks appeared; among them are those written by Richard Feynman, Halliday and Resnick, Alonso and Finn and the Berkeley series on physics. It is great pity to see that these texts have fallen to oblivion although new texts are superficial and published only for monetary gains by the publishers. Feynman's books, The Feynman Lectures on Physics, boxed set: The New Millennium Edition, still survive due to the European market; Halliday and Resnick's text similarly is still in print Physics, Volume 1 as Halliday, Resnick and Krane while the rest texts have been withdrawn from the market. Among those out of print is the 3-volume set by Alonso and Finn, the best introductory physics text ever written.
The title under review is the first volume containing mechanics and thermodynamics. It contains no colorful pictures; it is not even printed in a two-color printing. Yet, it provides the most focused, concise and clear introduction of the topic. No other book comes close --- not even Feynman's lectures. Feymnan's lectures are enjoyable since he has his own distinct and often eccentric point of view. But, with Feynman, when it comes to know the standard physics which is a must, you may feel a little at a loss. This is not the case with the text of Alonso and Finn. They present all essential ideas, key postulates and hidden assumptions. You get such a global view for a topic which you thought you knew that it will be impossible not to appreciate the depth of knowledge and extreme attention to detail by the authors.
I have read numerous introductory physics books. I have still to find a book which is written better than Alonso and Finn. New textbooks are written to impress with their colors and numerous photos which distract the reader from the text. They pay no attention to precision. Even worse, they water down topics that are essential to scientists in the courses to follow after the introductory general course. This trend appears to be propelled by the so-called reformers of education and physics education specialists. (For example the text Physics for Scientists and Engineers: A Strategic Approach with Modern Physics (3rd Edition) is one of the worst ever written.)
It might be obvious from my previous comments, but I should say it explicitly for the benefit of the readers. This text, as well as the other glorious ones from the past, contain topics that by today's standards of the introductory textbooks are excruciatingly hard. For example: Cylindrical and spherical coordinates used often in many situations; scattering of particles is discussed; special relativity is introduced and then related to electricity and magnetism in the second volume. Yes, topics that these days are in the advanced mechanics course but which used to be in the first semester introductory physics. Although science and mathematics produce new material as time passes, our educational system has elected to teach students less material. So, if you are a serious student, this is your book. You will learn physics as it should be. It is not really harder. Without the distractions and the digressions encountered in the colorful texts, you will discover what you were missing and what crime publishers are committing against you.
Finally I should add that as trends were changing, Addison-Wesley tried to save the text. It combined the 3 volumes in one bulky book, Physics, and made an update. Although the text is still superior to other texts, the changes which were made did affect the style of the book, reducing its overall appeal. So, if you can find the 3 volumes of the original edition, buy them. Otherwise buy the 3-in-1 book. If you speak other languages, search for the book in these languages. Contrary to the USA where trends change easily and books go out of print easily, in other countries the same books are printed for longer periods. The book has been translated in many languages (such as Spanish, German, Greek, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, etc.)
